What is double opt-in?

Double opt-in is a method whereby the email recipient gives the sender permission to contact them.  The request is logged and internet service providers may call upon a double-opt-in request to ensure emails are legitimate.  Furthermore many online CRM systems like mine (Infusionsoft) use dedicated servers for double opt-in emails, thereby ensuring higher delivery rates.

When is it spam?

No doubt you have received plenty of emails asking for money, offering the next best snake skin oil, and so on.   It’s a dangerous e-world out there and when you get an email with an offer that’s too good to be true, you have to ask yourself, is this for real?

Not to mention… what constitutes spam?   Junk mail is defined as unwanted, unsolicited consumer email that includes a sales offer.  Note that Business To Business (B2B) emails are considered commercial emails, not spam.

What to do with Spam?

First of, make sure it truly is spam.  You may have opted in to a newsletter, given your business card out, or requested information from someone.   So think twice before you blow a gasket and let them know how you feel about spam.   It can be embarrassing to complain to a vendor or client only to realize… oops it was a legitimate email.

Secondly, look for an unsubscribe or removal link or instructions.  Many emails contain them, you may have to scroll way down and look for the fine print.

If there is no unsubscribe link then simply reply back asking to be removed from the list.  But be careful, do this only with reputable senders.  For example I wouldn’t reply back to anyone offering me an inheritance from Nigeria…

Remember your ABC’s! Always Be Confirming that your recipient wants your email.   Offer double opt-in links and unsubscribe links!
