Once upon a time there were two companies that were hit by the Great Depression. One decided to do what most companies tend to do, cut back on expenses, andtheir marketing budget was one of the first things to go. The other company doubled their marketing budget and implemented an aggressive marketing campaign.
Which company produced better results?
You guessed it, the one that understood the importance of marketing in tough times. That company you’ve likely heard of. Kellogg, still the dominant player today. The other company, once a dominant player was Post. While Post survived the recession, they never recovered from making the biggest mistake any business can make…. Cutting their marketing budget instead of investing in their future and calculating ROI instead of savings. (On a side note, Post was a patient of Mr. Kellogg’s, who also happened to be a Chief Medical Officer.)
