Vancouver’s Talk 1410 CFUN Off Air
I received a call earlier from a client that informed me that Talk 1410 is off the air and their employees have been laid off. We had scheduled some advertising for the upcoming Life-Changing Workshop and were informed of the change. Some call this a conspiracy to keep talk-shows off the air for the upcoming Vancouver 2010 Olympics. It’s definitely a shame to see talk-radio disappear.
Update to all those seeking the Coast to Coast Program
CFAX out of Victoria broadcasts Coast to Coast and is accessible online:

According to 24 Hours, Employees at Talk 1410 have been laid off Thursday as the radio station gears up for a re-brand later this month.
Employees learned today that CHUM has decided to turn the all-talk radio station into a sports-only program under the name “Team 1410.”
New programming is already on the air, but the full re-brand is expected to take effect as early as next week.
The new direction is part of a widespread financial restructuring of the four CHUM stations in Vancouver, which also include Team 1040, The Beat 94.5 and 103.5 QM/FM.

VERY SURPRISED AND DISAPPOINTED. Wasn’t it bad enough a few months ago when Patrick MALAHEAH and Mark Driessen were let go. ARE THERE THAT MANY AMERICAN SPORTS FANS IN THIS MARKET TO FLOAT THIS IDEA ? Joe Leary, another swell and witty voice on the air waves.Dave Brindle seemed like a voice of reason also. Seems wretched.More like a bummer. HOPEFULLY, after the big hoopla in Feb.it might changeover. What about George Norrey ? I’ve been listening to CFUN since the 60’s.I have in my archives some blue car CFUN window stickers. In 1969 their call letters had changed to CKVN. Their music surveys are stashed in my archives. Hope to see them back ! ?
What Crap who the hell gives a hoot about sports. Where is the real news and freedom of speech. BIG MISTAKE 1410 You are off my radar!
This sucks big time. No more coast to coast am.
Who needs more sports.
This totally sucks! the only thing that kept me sane driving my kids here and there was listening to 1410!!!
I guess Cfun is desperate and they had to do what they had to do, to keep their last breath. They were backed into a corner and this is all that is left. Must be a drag for all those newer hosts. I will miss Joe and most of the gang. It’s a big fat drag!!!
This really upsets me — I look forward to Coast to Coast each evening and have been listening since it started. Yes, I am a sports fan but 24/7? Please!!!! Just tell me where I can now find C2Cam!
I’m very disappointed as well, we had our radio ad for the Life-Changing Workshop running on CFUN and now we have to look for other ways to advertise. For anyone interested you can find more info by clicking my name or visiting TransformYourWorldNow dot com.
I can’t believe you guys did this! I used to listen to CFUN 1410 everyday and throughout the day. First you let go of Shane Foxmen, then Jenn and Joe were gone (all three were hilarious!) Now everyone is gone and for what? Sports all day! Are you kidding? When I turned on the radio the other day and heard sports, I had to check if someone changed the dial. You do realize that a lot of your listeners are WOMEN don’t you? Really bad business decision. I hope you realize this soon and bring CFUN back the way it used to be!
I am devestated by the loss of this great station. I will especially miss Nicky Renshaw, and many other shows. I don’t even know what I will listen to when I am driving, or doing chores around the house. I wish there was a way to bring this station back.
I was very surprised when i turned on the radio and i heard sports. I am in my early fourtys and i have been listening for the past eight years. I use to listen to your station back when wolf man jack was on air. And that was a VERY long time ago. Every morning i would wake up it would start with my drive to work listening to it, all day in the office, my drive home at night, and I use to go to sleep with my radio on. I remember when art bell use to be there at night time and this is a real big dissapointment. And if you can tell me what station would have the same type of broadcast, then point me in that direction. If you decide to smarten up and return to the way it use to be then E-mail me because i will no longer turn my radio on to this station. Thank you very much. Elizabeth
My name is Jessica. I am a 19 year old mom to be. I grew up listening to this station. My mother use to listen to it all the time, and instead of rotting my brain away with t.v, I would listen with my mom to all the ghost stories, out of body experiences, stories about time travel and god knows what else. On many occasions my mother and I would call in. A few times we would even get through and be on air. 1410 was a big part of my childhood, and even to this day i would listen to it practically all day, I would even fall asleep listening to it. I was hoping to share that experience with my daughter due in february. Being pregnant, it is rather hard to sleep at night and 1410 was my only source of comfort/entertainment and now I have nothing. I really hope you guys bring it back!
That just totally sucks. I guess I will have to erase 1410 off my speed dial forever. I will miss Joe Leary, Dr. Laura, and of course Coast to Coast AM. It’s been my bed time companion for 10+ years. Who needs another sports channel! I’m just totally bummed about this.
I wish there was some way you guys could have calculated the number of listeners you had under the old format, then you’d really realize that you’ve probably lost 50% of your listeners. What a shame, I enjoyed listening to Val,Patrick,Cate,Joe on my way to work. The changes that were made got progressively worse, if it ain’t broken don’t fix it.
I will especially miss Coast to Coast every night, it provided welcome relief from the drivel that passes as news from the controlled media. I have no choice but to find another station in Victoria or Calgary that broadcasts the show until I can listen online. Sport’s ok, just not interesting enough 24/7. Sorry, you’ve been deleted from my preset button.
I have listened to coast to coast am for 12 years!! and out of the blue its replaced by a 24 hour sports channel-. BAD Decision!!! NO ONE WANTS SPORTS ON THE RADIO 24/7-1410 was unique and Coast to coast was my nightly fix-if I want sports I have a dozen sports channels, plus the news paper and my local pub! BIG marketing error boyz! Women listen to nightly radio…
Vancouver, is a hick town pretending to have a big city personality.
It has taken me a few days to realize that cursing my new Sirrus Sattelite radio for “overriding” my favourite channel was a waste of time. I was about to call the Car Dealer to have them fix the problem when i came across this new “Sports” format information.
I believe that it is a huge mistake and will spend countless hours trying to find another station to listen to. What are they thinking, the listeners were incredibly loyal.
I cant believe this sh$t. I am so upset. I love my Canucks as well as the leos, but come on who are we really kidding here, a 24/7 sports station isn’t 1040 bad enough. When they put Simi on in the mornings i thought that wasn’t a great move, but i got used to it. It doesn’t matter that they had a wide range of women listners there are alot of men who listen to. I am going to miss the whole cast, yes even Nikki Renshaw who i never saw eye to eye with but still she kept me amused. I will really miss Dr. Laura. I cant believe this great dynasty has come to a end, if i ever win the lottery i will bring back these great radio personalities.
That sucks! I go to be almost every night listening to coast to coast
I’m really going to miss the station…
I have been hunting for the station for a week and just found out it has been replaced. My drive isn’t as enjoyable, I feel I am probably missing some news of great importance. This station provided me with every day and important news not always found in my newspaper or on the local TV news. It also provided an insight or different perspective, because of the hosts take on it and the other callers. I have been searching for something similar and haven’t yet found anything. I will miss all the talk show hosts and hope this wasn’t as sudden for them as it has been for your listeners.
Where can i enquire about a station using Coast to Coast with George Noory? I miss that program sorely. I don’t need Dr. Laura but I do need Coast to Coast .. PLEASE!!!!
Great news! CFAX 1070 has a life radio stream, click my name to take you to the website.
Feedback can be emailed to http://www.teamradio.ca/contact/index.php?
Extremely disappointed. lots of friends very disappointed also. I can’t imagine driving at night after a gig and not listening to Coast to Coast…you must air it on a different chanel !!!!!
Seriously miss the day talk shows too, it was the only program on the radio I listened to. Big mistake, you probably lost mre then 50% of your audience, there is plenty of informations on sport everywhere, newspapers, tv, more radio shows etc. I can’t understand, you had hardly any competition, it was a unique show…I have been searching for a week…fimally came on line to see what happened…….madder then hell..
Hey Gregor; Wow! Hit a nerve here or what?
CFUN laid off 23 people and that sucks. The reality was the station had very, very few listeners – there were blocks of time when the average quarter hour listenership was less than 500 people – midday! (I’ve seen the BBM numbers- it was grim!) Other stations have up to 70,000 in those same times… and are struggling to make dough.
IMO, there was no way that the station could continue to operate with a personnel heavy format like local talk and have so few listeners… the more listeners the higher the advertising rates right? This has zero, nuffink, nada to do with the olympics. Radio advertising is down 25% or more in this market. (some stations are recovering)
The people who are pissed off about this will see that this all sports thing craps out in very short order. The other sports radio station is losing money; and they have the big draw of hockey; how can this one with US college football and basketball have anyone listening? Meh.
They lowered their costs drastically, but seriously – radio top management has their heads so far up their asses I’m amazed they can even draw breath. In fact – they are all zombies.
Ultimately, the intertubes, iPod, and bad management killed this station and there’s lots more broadcasters who are gonna fold. They have no idea how to adapt. Same as TV… there are stations in town staggering already. Who do you bet kicks the bucket next? Or will the Province paper be next?
I’m betting it’s between one of the classic rock stations, all traffic (?), TV station or the Province. Maybe even before the Olympics… maybe more than one!
OMG what a HUGE mistake….. ANOTHER SPORTS STATION? Are u freakin KIDDING me?? just go off the air already… Boy u guys are stupid.
I just can’t believe this,I’m so dissappointed. Have listed to this station since Nic and Nic in the morning in the 1990’s.So many people have been commenting all over the place, could the ratings have been that bad? Sure hope some other ratio staion picks up on this. All the best to the staff, many of them will probably not have the opportunity to work in radio again. And Jennifer Thompson, if you read this your are in our thoughts and prayers
Hi There
Very disappointed about this station 1410 CFUN know more Coast To Coast that is a big mistake to make, no longer listening to CFUN.Im now listening to 1530 Sacromento a lest they have Coast To Coast.
Regards
Ross
Mark Bossert:
There are or have been a problem with considering statistics-BBMs??
and I believe this to be a fact for most radio programs.
I was away in Ontario when this Bizarro mistake was made!! And time will show that it is a mistake-and I have since done considerable research on line.
There are hundreds of comments by FORMER CFUN listeners out there on many different forums including the canucks website/message boards where loyal fans are disappointed in the loss of the regular programming on CFUN-On a Vancouver Sun blog there were close to 400 comments alone and close to another 100 in a kelowna news blog.Did every single daily listener write a comment??? HARDLY!!
I have had the privilidge of working in both business, government and community service in many different offices over my 15 years in Vancouver and Surrey and I rarely if ever hear any radio on-especially in government offices. Women are more often at home during the day…why does another 24 hour sports radio station make sense?
It doesn’t-and marketing is just ignoring the reality of a huge female listening market.
I listen Nightly for 12 years-I listened to morning shows and Saturday programming. No body is really listening during the day to anything consistantly-even if they are driving around. Women especially are notorious channel changers. CFUN 1410 is a home station that NO one who listens, changes. I may listen to three different radio programs in my car inter-changably-but at home, that radio was on every night from 10 pm until 7:30 am when I leave for work…and all morning Saturday when I clean or lounge around the apartment and on weekend evenings too. And apparently, I am not alone by a long shot.
The Coast to Coast fans in Vancouver are a large demographic and this reality has been under recognized.
What a flippin shame…will miss Simmi and all the other talk show hosts that presented during the day….like all the other comments posted before me, owners/management have made a very poor choice by switching to an all sports format.
I do understand that Coast to Coast will soon broadcast a new Vancouver affiliate and whatever station it is that picks up the show, they will benefit greatly.
Well said! One misfortune becomes another’s opportunity see. In this case, whatever station that picks up coast to coast.
Unbelievable, this is just sad, I really looked forward to getting into my car and listening to Nikki, the Dr’s and anyone else you kept replacing. These are years where the comfort of listening to some great information or just some funny stories, people calling in. This is the way old-fashioned communication is needed. I learned a lot of interesting facts and got some very important info.I even enjoyed the
advertisers and was hooked up with one of them that really changed
my health life. I can’t even imagine what there is to listen to now, there isn’t any other station like this. Why go and screw up something that isn’t broken. THANKS A LOT——-nothing left to listen to on the
good old fashioned radio.
I thought something was wrong with my radio when I dialed 1410 to pick up the regular programming that I’ve listened to – morning, noon and night. Alas. The programs were gone as if struck dead. And, done in such a sneaky way. Don’t you think?
At least have the common decency to let all who supported your programming know what stations we can tune in so we can pick up the pieces and enjoy what had become such a part of our everyday lives. Or, is this asking to much.
Is this sports station the GREAT PROGRAMMING that you said was in store? Like we need more sports! Shame! Shame!
Some marketing analysis for CHUM/BELL/Team 1410 to consider.
People are angry out there-across the province-and there are a lot of them!!People are voicing their concerns-I am sure 1410’s mail box’s are overflowing!

To whom ever made the decision to make this change..YOU SUCK!!! Disbelieve is what I felt when the format was changed. I can’t believe someone thought another am all sports station was a sound decision. When you fail, I hope you didn’t piss off the on air talent you fired so bad they won’t come back when you figure out what a huge mistake you made. You’ve lost me as a regular listener till you bring back Nikki, Joe, Val Cole, and the wonderful staff & producers they worked with. Again, just in case you actually listen to your audience, change it back!
WE MISS COAST TO COAST. NUMBER ONE LATE NITE SHOW IN THE WORLD! AND FOR A GOOD REASON!!!
Thanks for taking Coast to Coast off.
Retards at work listened to it.
If I had to listen about Ghosts, Bigfoot, and Aliens anymore, I was going to go on a killing spree.
As disappointed as I am to lose some of the more intelligent, informative and humorous CFUN talk shows, I’m not all that surprised by this desperate move by the suits running CFUN, they’ve been floundering around for a year juggling and removing hosts. Plus their signal has been abysmal for months with drop outs all over town. That alone would account for lousy ratings and as a result, advertising revenue.
Also their evening shrink shows were a mess, no one down there seemed to be aware that they were repeating segments of the same Dr Laura show up to 4 times. Or maybe they were and just didn’t give a damn.
So now they think a “dumb as a plank” sports talk format might save their mismanaged asses. I give it 6 months tops, then some other change will emerge, like a 24 hour pet talk or best gas prices format.
Jerks,
You’ve replaced a ‘Mona Lisa’ with ‘Dogs Playing Poker’. I hope you wind up playing with yourself. There’s a place for sports; but this is just embarrassing. Go have a beer or ten. You disgust me.

I can’t believe it I’ve been listening to talk 1410 since the beginning with Pia in the mornings and Nick and Nick, Dr. Mirkin, I got use to your changes and would be upset once in awhile because things changed. I loved your female hosts and it was wonderful having subjects that us wemon were interested in. I felt it was about time! I never listened to another radio station. Then one by one you added these idiot men to your shows and slowing I started not listening to any show but Nicki’s and then Nicki was never on and I found out what happened! Who ever are listening to your show now are a bunch of idiots who know nothing about life but sports and bars. I didn’t realize we had so many no minds in Vancouver. What a joke! Your off my speed dial forever. And by the way my husbands too!
Get it together guys, you’re rebranding something that was for the most part right in the first place, Jen an Joe were real good certainly more refreshing than Bill “politically correct” Good.
I agree with most posts here 1410’s off my dial what’s the point ?
And miss falling asleep to Coast to Coast no matter how goofy it is at times.
Nikolis
Most of what I have to say has already been said above. And I agree, ANOTHER ALL SPORTS FORMAT???? I live just north of Calgary Ab., and if the skip was right, I would listen to later morning programming. I think Nikki Renshaw has the sexiest accent on radio and I will sorely miss her. I wish them all well.
John of Airdrie Ab.
I completely agree with the comments above, as I also listened since Nick and Nick, and also Pia. I just can’t get over this. The dumbest thing I have heard of in a long time. what a gong show
I love talk radio and primarily listen to it everytime I am in the car…i flip from Sima Sara (she was well informed and asked the hard questions)….then later I would like to listen to Dr Joy Brown, Dr Laura and the Coast to Coast……..sports…..not likely to ever get me listening….I am looking for another way to find my talk people.
when you change it back….we’ll be there, maybe..
COAST TO COAST VANCOUVER AFFILIATE!?!
Since Sat. Nov. 21/09, I have been listening to COAST TO COAST on CKNW 980 from 1:00 a.m. to 5:00 a.m. Nothing official on either website as yet altough CKNW is showing an adjustment on their “Classic Radio” program time from a 3 hour show to a 1 hour show. Love Classic Radio and Coast to Coast….hope we can have both! Well done, CKNW 980!
WHAT ARE YOU THINKING!!!! Sports all day you’ve got to be kidding me!!!! I thought something was wrong
with the dial until I figured out that it was YOU that there was something WRONG with. You’ve got rid of some great and entertaining talk show hosts to repalce them with Sports! Give your head a shake. Until you
bring back Simmi, Dave, Joe, Nikki and the rest of the talk show hosts you’ve lost me and everyone I know as listeners. I can’t think of anything more boring than football and hockey all day!!
My wife and I used to listen to 1410 because of the variety of talk radio hosts. I listened to it in the car,at work and often at home, but not anymore….I have tuned it out for good. I have no use for sports……boring. Another customer gone……bye bye.
When I got into my car and turned on the radio, I couldn’t believe my ears….sports all day? What a drag. I know at least 50 people on the Sunshine Coast who are in shock…although Nicki used to drive me nuts, I will miss her and her zany remarks and I loved to listen to Dr Laura (as much as I sometimes disagreed with her) and Dr Joy. What a huge mistake. Are you men thinking??????? Who is home to listen to this garbage? Another ding for women…thanks guys!
Very sad to hear CFUN talk radio is no longer the station I have been a faithful listener to for at least 10 or more years. I certainly won’t be a listener anymore and will miss all of the shows I tuned into every day on my commute.
Added insult to injury to Coast to Coast AM fans. CKNW is now airing it from 1am to 5am. Good grief. Thanks for nothing CKNW. Seriously they think Dan Russell’s boring sports talk has a larger audience then C2C!
Time to find a new radio station for me. My dial will not be on 1410, that’s for sure!!!! You must have a new private owner who loves sports – who would use your advertising on a sports only station? This sounds like a new male conspiracy…..
R
Thank God it’s off the air….It was the most depressing station in Vancouver. The hosts were all whiners, include all the callers. Soooo negative, all the time. That’s why it’s now sports…positive, nothing negative. Cheer up!
Thank you for the link to CFAX.
1410 really sucks the big one now.
Coast to coast rules and to switch to sports is the stupidest thing to do.
Although it is better than selling it to that crappy paki music.
I wanted to add my comments to the already ones I have read. I had to check the internet to see what happened to the people I find very funny and enteraining when I am in my car, I will never listen to the 1410 again as who needs that much sports and all the so called experts. Wow I still cannot believe this. Betty
It’s always bad when people loose radio programming they have enjoyed for years. I remember being shocked when CFUN changed from music to talk. The same with CKLG, too. It just didn’t seem right to hear nothing but talk after listening to great music on these stations since the early 60’s. But the reality is radio is a very volatile medium. It’s driven by ratings and stations have to constantly change their programming or their image to try to stay alive. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn’t and it’s the loyal listeners who suffer the most when the experiment fails. I’m sure the new sports talk format won’t last long. It will be interesting to see what they do next. They can’t have the CFUN call letters, though, since they’re now used by 104.9 FM. It’s hard to keep track of who’s who these days on the air in Vancouver!
EXTREMELY DISAPPOINTED! WHERE IS MY TALK RADIO? I COULD TAKE THIS PERSONALLY!
24 hr. sports? Are you kidding me? There are a lot of disappointed women out here. Where’s Dr. Laura? Where’s Nikki? Where’s Coast to Coast? Ya, I thought so . . .
I had someone forward this link to me.
Someone was wondering how I’m doing.
I’m happy to report that I am doing great.
They found some more cancer before Christmas, I had surgery and am just recovering from that now. The good news is, I will be fine! It’s just been a hell of a journey.
Thanks for all of the good wishes and prayers. It meant a lot and has helped me get through this.
Jennifer
Sad to see CFUN go talk radio.I lived in Anchorage,Alaska back in 1979 i first heard CFUN AM back then i got the signal over AM radio up in Anchorage i don’t way i got the signal but could only get the signal at night crazy as it sounds i guess because of the airwaves at night.I never been much into talk radio.Loved the music on CFUN back.
