Are You Better Than Eddie?
by Kelowna Marketing Consultant and Small Business Coach Larry Arrance
In the movie ‘The Nutty Professor” Eddie Murphy plays seven different roles. This is quite impressive considering most actors find it challenging enough to focus on just one. Have you ever stopped to consider how many roles you have and how well you focus on them?
I ask my clients to write out every role they play in life. You’ll probably find that the number is far greater than Eddie Murphy’s seven. For myself they include, father, grandfather, husband, coach, speaker, writer, facilitator, marketer, businessman, neighbor, etc. Some of you may have a smaller list others much longer.
Once you’ve written your list, take a look at each role and ask yourself, “How am I performing in this role? Hopefully you’re going to find that in some of your roles you are putting in an outstanding performance and you deserve to keep the part. In the roles where your performance is coming up short of ideal, you need to set some goals.
Lots of people will have goals for their finances but not for their relationships, careers or community involvement. Improving your performance in each role doesn’t have to be a huge endeavor. As a parent or grandparent or spouse my goal could be as simple to make sure that I find one thing a day I can praise them on or make sure I confirm that I love them and appreciate them. As a marketer I can commit to reading one chapter of a sales or marketing book everyday. The point is that if being good in any of your roles is important than you need to set goals to achieve a higher level of performance.
Write out your list of roles and tape it somewhere you’ll see it everyday. This will remind you of what is important in your life and include these among the things you want to accomplish that day. Do this and you’ll live an Oscar worthy life.
